Ratings Systems

The rating of dishes at Chilli night has changed over the years as the focus has moved away from simply being the hottest dish, but also to being the tastiest and the most innovative. Up until 2012 a simple star rating was used which was a combination of heat and taste. in 2012 these scores were split into two separate scores.

In 2013 it was decided that due to a number of dishes (primarily the Ceviche and Spiced Rum Chillis), that a score for originality should be awarded. This co-incided with a change to Chilli Night which saw each of the three take a course each rather than the previous method of cooking together.

TASTE:
The taste score simply reflects how much the meal is enjoyed. This score is taken regardless of the heat in the dish, however particularly good use of chilli as the theme ingredient should be reflected in the score.

CHILLI:
This score is purely on the heat of the dish, the traditional key to a chilli night winner.

ORIGINALITY:

This score was introduced to ensure innovation in Chilli Night. It means that we can award bold choices, even if they may not work out quite as intended. An exact repeat of a dish that has been previously been done at Chilli Night may not receive more than a score of 1 unless the recipe has been significantly altered.

In 2014 debate over whether the original aim of chilli night (fun and drinking rather than competition and brinksmanship) had been lost resulted in a chilli night without ratings. This has continued to subsequent chilli nights.
